From Arizona, their just-released album, Everchanging Trail, is pure country and western, with an emphasis on "western." Frontwoman Laura Kepner-Adney sounds like a cross between Iris Dement and Chrissie Hynde and has worked with Robyn Hitchcock, Calexico, and Howie Gelb. She's also been involved with other roots bands for a decade, so she's not an ingenue. They are currently on tour in the Southwest. And they sound pretty good, too.<br> </p>

We saw so many old friends and made some new ones. Among them were Dylan Ludwig, Tres Ikner and Bobby Bennett. We had tentative plans to record in the morning at Prescott's best guitar shop, Grey Dog Guitars, but were concerned about singing so early, so we decided to just go for it after our show was finished (around 11PM). Tres and Dylan went home to charge their cameras and grab some beer, and we headed over to <a contents="Milagro Arts Center" data-link-label="" data-link-type="url" href="http://www.milagroarts.org" target="_blank">Milagro Arts Center</a>. They've got this big stage area with killer natural reverb, and we decided that the best song for the space was 'Everchanging Trail,' which Sam and Laura co-wrote during the East Coast leg of the last tour. It's four-part a cappella harmony, and it's a tricky one. But we think we did a pretty good job, so we're gonna share this footage with you. Please show your friends and let us know what you think! Thanks a bunch.<br><br><iframe class="justify_inline" data-video-type="youtube" data-video-id="4FhzZ9ZSxnw" data-video-thumb-url="http://img.youtube.com/vi/4FhzZ9ZSxnw/0.jpg" type="text/html" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4FhzZ9ZSxnw?rel=0&wmode=transparent&enablejsapi=1" frameborder="0" height="200" width="320" allowfullscreen="true"></iframe>Laura and the Killed Mentag:www.lauraandthekilledmen.com,2005:Post/37539042015-06-24T21:44:49-07:002017-01-16T09:05:55-07:00Tour update!<div class="captioned justify_center"><img src="//d10j3mvrs1suex.cloudfront.net/u/157322/cdbcd09cf3e960616ba2015efd2512415df7aad6/original/11391179-954838507869997-2894591966435759606-n.jpg?1435204235" class="size_orig justify_center border_" /><p class="caption">Photo by Beth Meier from the Random Tea Room in Philly</p></div><br><br>The past month has seen us through flat tires, ten straight days of driving in the rain, couchsurfing with old friends and total strangers, wistful streamside walks, one million whiskey drinks, and the most humidity any of us knew could fit in the air (looking at you, Milwaukee). The 6-track EP, <em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; ">One Bell,</em> offers a timeless Americana certain to enchant listeners of every age. On <em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; ">One Bell,</em> an earthen musicality meets the golden-hued voice of Laura Kepner-Adney for a collection that is elegant rather than quaint, something the genre could use a little bit more of these days.</p>
<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; ">The EP opens with “All the Gold is Gone”; a windswept dirge that could easily be mistaken for a Dust-Bowl ballad. Maybe that has something with the classical training of both Laura and her Killed Men. Frontwoman Laura Kepner-Adney attended the Oberlin Conservatory with the intention of becoming an opera singer for a year, but “wound up graduating from the College with a degree in politics and a healthy love for the full spectrum of music and singing.”</p>
<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; ">She seems to have found her home in the folk-fused style of Laura and the Killed Men with its distinctive Western nod. There is a strength and precision in her voice that is put to good use on <em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; ">One Bell. </em>In the second track, “Black Blizzard”, you can clearly discern these qualities. Actually, any track from <em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; ">One Bell </em>should suffice.</p>
<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; ">As far as my favorite song from the new EP goes, it’s been a bit of a toss-up between “It’s You” and “The Archer”. The former shines with a heart-warming romanticism that steers clear of sentimentalism while “The Archer” provides the perfect vehicle for band’s strangely powerful harmonic prowess.</p>
<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; ">Kepner-Adney performs in a number of different musical projects out of Tucson including The Cordials, The Silver Thread Trio, and, most recently, Sun Bones. There is a symbiosis that exists between Sun Bones and Laura and the Killed Men. Both bands count the same members in its ranks, but both present their own unique brand of modern Americana that casts a very clear divide between the two acts.</p>
<p style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1.5em; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; ">The release show for <i style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; font-size: 13px; font: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; font-style: italic; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; ">One Bell</i> is set for Saguaro Corners in Tucson on May 9th. And, get this, the album will be released as a CD/record hybrid. That means you can play one side in your CD player (or computer, etc.) to listen to the first five songs AND THEN you can flip it over and play the other side on your record player to hear the last track. Phoenix fans can expect a Valley show this summer. We’ll keep you posted on that event.</p>
